Station Reports - MMS
A number of standard reports are generated from MMS at the end of each month. These reports provide a focused, coherent set of station details for various systems. A series of automated and manual QC checks helps identify errors in the station information with such errors corrected prior to final release of the reports. While additional reports may be developed as needs arise, the current production reports currently fall under these groups:
MSHR: Master Station History Report - This is a list of basic information for every station in the MMS database. The report includes three primary files:
- MSHR_FULL.TXT / Documentation
Formally identified as the DSI-9767 dataset, this is the standard MSHR report, sorted by NCDC Station ID and then period of record. The listing includes historical changes in the reported fields, resulting in a given station might have a dozen records in the report, a new one created for every time period in which some reported component of a station changed.
- MSHR_CHARLES.TXT / Documentation
The same content as the standard MSHR report, with a short, consistent version of the station name appended to each record
- CCSL.TXT / Documentation
The Comprehensive Cooperative Station List contains a single, minimal entry for each Coop station ID in either MMS or the Pre-1948 cooperative station history database
CD MSI: Climatological Data Master Station Index - This group of reports pertains to the roughly 8680 NWS Cooperative Network sites whose observations are published in the NCDC's Climatological Data publication. The report group comprises two principal reports:
- CD_MSI.TXT / Documentation
The master station list of stations published in the Climatological Data publication.
HPD MSI: Hourly Precipitation Data Master Station Index - This group of reports pertains to the roughly 2780 NWS Cooperative Network sites whose observations are published in the NCDC's Hourly Precipitation Data publication. The significant report in this group is:
- HPD_MSI.TXT / Documentation
The master station list of stations published in the Hourly Precipitation Data publication
SIGS: Significant Station Changes for the NWS Cooperative Network - The Sig report is a listing of all significant changes that have been processed at the NCDC Archive Branch for the NWS cooperative network. This report is produced each month. The information provided includes identifiers, publication information, effective date of the change, and a brief description of the change.
WBAN: Weather-Bureau-Army-Navy - WBAN numbers were the first major attempt at a coordinated station numbering scheme among several weather reporting authorities. Original participants in the WBAN number plans were the United States Weather Bureau, Air Force, Navy, and Army;and the Canadian Department of Transportation. Selected German and Korean stations in close cooperation with the US Weather Services are also included. This list is updated monthly.
- WBAN.XLS / Documentation
This is the official WBAN master station list. It is a five-digit station identifier used at NCDC for digital data storage and general station identification purposes. WBAN is an acronym, invented in the 1950's, which stands for Weather-Bureau-Army-Navy. WBAN station numbers were first used as identifiers for stations reporting meteorological observations on the then-standard WBAN series of forms (e.g. WBAN 10A, 10B, and 10C).
The following are up-to-date text files of NEXRAD, CRN, AWOS, and ASOS station lists. Each file consist of the WBAN and COOP ID's, Station Names and their locations, including the Lat/Lon and Elevation.
- NEXRAD.TXT / Documentation
A fixed-length text summary listing of current NEXRAD radar stations, including identifiers and the latest known location information
- CRN.TXT / Documentation
A fixed-length text summary listing of current Climate Reference Network (CRN) stations, including identifiers and the latest known location information
- AWOS.TXT / Documentation
A fixed-length text summary listing of current Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) stations, including identifiers and the latest known location information
- ASOS.TXT / Documentation
A fixed-length text summary listing of current Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) stations, including identifiers and the latest known location information
